With heavy rains in the forecast, Snohomish PUD has announced an “unscheduled”
whitewater recreational opportunity on the Upper Sultan River on Sunday, November 1st. Flows are
anticipated to be between 600 cfs and 1,000 cfs below Culmback Dam and will begin at 10:00
a.m. In addition to providing a
whitewater boating opportunity, these flows will benefit the overall health of the
river.
This Class IV gorge is a great piece of whitewater in a spectacular setting. These flows follow
scheduled releases that first took place earlier this year in April and September. The gorge is
extremely remote with limited access and wood hazards are present. The run is still relatively
new, and we recommend that boaters who are new to the run have solid Class IV creeking skills and
seek first-hand reports of the run.
To take advantage of this opportunity, paddlers will need to sign up in advance with
Snohomish PUD and complete a release form. You can do both on their whitewater
recreation web page, which also provides video clips of the various river reaches.
American Whitewater has worked for years to restore flows to the Sultan River. For more
information on this history, visit our announcement about
the releases last April.
Have fun!
