American Whitewater Stewardship Assistant
Description:
The American Whitewater Stewardship Assistant will be responsible for supporting American
Whitewater Stewardship Directors in project-related analysis and research, as well as
communicating and advocating our work to resource agencies, funders, elected officials, and our
membership. This Stewardship Assistant will have the opportunity to become intimately
familiar with American Whitewater’s efforts on national energy policy, Wild and Scenic
River advocacy, federal hydropower licensing, and a host of local conservation and access issues.
In working on these issues the Stewardship Assistant will be expected to review, synthesize and
effectively develop written responses in public review processes, develop webpage content, write
for the American Whitewater Journal and help in creating membership appeals. In addition the
position holder will assist stewardship staff in fundraising and outreach responsibilities for
various projects.
The Stewardship Assistant will be a new half-time position with an initial term of one year, with
possibility of additional hours-per-week and extensions based on funding. Location is California.
Pay is hourly and based on experience.
Skills and Requirements:
- Passion for rivers and their responsible enjoyment
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to provide analysis of information from a variety of sources
- In-depth knowledge of western whitewater rivers, paddling, and related issues
- Strong commitment to a collaborative team-driven approach
- Self-motivation and ability to work independently and think critically
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in science, policy, law, journalism, or related field
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and general photo editing
